Bill 60

It is not immediately clear where or if this item from councillor Cheng is positioned in or against the broader discussions, at city council, in the aftermath of the province's Bill 60. The item rode high on the FoNTRA web pages in the third week of January 2026: https://secure.toronto.ca/council/agenda-item.do?item=2025.MM35.16

The opposition NDP posted on October 24th as so: https://www.ontariondp.ca/news/stiles-ndp-bring-motion-repeal-bill-60-and-ensure-fairness-ltb

TAC held a Zoom meeting re: Bill 60 on November 19th. It was fairly wide-ranging as these things go; I'm pretty sure I recorded most of it. More information and multimedia to follow about that end of the process. Acorn had a Zoom meeting as well but details on that one were/are a bit thin.

----------

It all started when the Tories tabled their new Bill 60 on October 23 (2025). Housing minister Rob Flack
*TWEETED* his concerns about Bill 60 on Sunday October 26, 2025 and the Toronto Star posted about it the next day (ARCHIVED LINK)

Also on Sunday Oct. 26th, a CP24 item said that the Ford government was walking back some of the Bill 60 stuff, but what good are airly phrases like "cracking down on abuse"? See also Thursday's press release: https://news.ontario.ca/en/release/1006645/province-introducing-legislation-to-build-homes-and-infrastructure-faster.

The Globe and Mail said Ontario would backpedal “on proposed rule changes that prevent landlords from evicting tenants”. The Globe item is archived here.

The Green Party's statement meanwhile, was posted to www.gpo.ca/2025/10/24/ford-proposes-to-gut-tenant-rights-fuel-homelessness/

The recently updated York South - Weston "tenant union" web pages suggested sending
a pre-written e-mail message to the FRPO, but the accompanying text didn't have a lot to say about privacy: https://www.tenantunion.ca/handsoffourrights. Acorn suggested phone calls to M.P.P.'s ahead of the November 25th vote.

Going back to past postings, some of the talk about this - like on Acorn's web pages - reminds me of that 2017 Globe and Mail item about Preston boss Gloria Salomon and rent controls - Globe writer Marcus Gee called the 25 St. Dennis area an "ideal spot for intensification". Try not to gag on that one.

Cable TV channel CP24 ran a clip about the protests and some of the issues; one edited version of their coverage was posted to Youtube at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9mfHwIsBsgU

Note that the CP24's Youtube clip and their *broadcast* clip were different. I had met one of the women in the longer, broadcast clip back in May when I attended Acorn's East York chapter meeting and she was the chair, but other than PDF-only copies of their 2025 reports, I never heard from Acorn again and I never saw the minutes of the meeting that I attended. My fault somehow? Or...???

Also note that the
poster for the October 23rd protest did not mention the ODSP Action Coalition's press release.

The FMTA's statement on Bill 60 is here: www.torontotenants.org/ford_is_stripping_away_tenant_rights_in_ontario. Oddly enough, the FMTA does not mention TAC, nor is there anything about further networking or any suggestions for further action(s). The FMTA's item is backed up here.

It's important to note that "Bill 60" refers to two different, significant pieces of Ontario legislation from the last two years. The most recent discourse (late 2025) concerns a new bill about housing and landlord/tenant reforms. The prominent discourse from 2023 was about a different Bill 60, the Your Health Act.
This is the discourse from 2023 and the "other" Bill 60:
